What is Similarweb?

What is Similarweb?

Similarweb is quite similar to Semrush. It was launched in 2007 as a web analytics tool that helps users understand website performance and competition. The tool provides insights into traffic sources, audience demographics, and much more.

With Similarweb, you can see how much traffic your competitors are getting, where that traffic is coming from, and which keywords they’re ranking for. So, to put it simply – it is useful for market research and tracking how websites perform over time.

Here are some powerful capabilities of Similarweb.

  • Full website performance analytics
  • Keyword research and traffic analysis
  • Estimates competitor website traffic
  • Shows top traffic sources of competitors
  • Tracks how your site ranks on Google over time
  • Finds top keywords for video marketing
  • Identifies the most effective paid campaigns
  • Analyzes daily mobile app performance
  • Keeps track of market changes and audience behavior

Fun fact: When you visit the Similarweb website – the first thing you notice is a search box where you can easily analyze any website for free.

Semrush vs. Similarweb – Features Comparison

So, what’s the difference between Semrush and Similarweb if they both seem to offer the same thing? The answer is simple – one offers a better set of SEO features than the other. Now, again, I get that reading through everything can take time, so here is a quick comparison table to give you an overview of their features at a glance.

Similarweb vs. Semrush – Keyword Research

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Database size40 trillion inbound linksUnknown
Keyword databaseOver 26 billion keywords5 billion keywords
Keyword lists
Keyword search
Rank tracking
Keyword sorting
Keyword comparison
Keyword Gap
On-demand metric update

We all know that keyword research is the base of all SEO and PPC strategies. And when it comes to this feature – I’ve found that Semrush clearly takes the lead.

Semrush offers a large keyword database of around 26.1 billion. It also has over 40 trillion inbound links in its database to assist with keyword research. Now that’s huge, right? Apart from that, it also provides nearly 20 million ideas for a single keyword. This large volume allows you to analyze keywords across multiple industries – giving a broader scope for SEO strategies.

And that’s not it.

Semrush also has unique features like the Personal Keyword Difficulty tool. It gives you custom insights into how well your site could rank for specific keywords. Plus, the Keyword Gap feature lets you compare your keyword profile with up to five competitors. The Keyword Magic Tool also makes it easy to find long-tail keywords and offers plenty of filters to fine-tune results.

Semrush Keyword Research.webp

On the other hand – Similarweb has around 5 billion keywords in its Keyword Generator – which might be sufficient for some marketers. But there is one thing to note here. Similarweb is older than Semrush and claims to rely on fresh data to offer real-time keywords.

Similarweb Keyword Research.webp

Winner: Semrush

While Similarweb’s keyword generator is useful – it doesn’t quite match Semrush in terms of depth and accuracy. It’s also harder to analyze data quickly due to the cluttered interface. And, the sheer size and depth of Semrush’s keyword database, along with its advanced tools, make it a more powerful option.

Semrush vs. Similarweb – Local SEO

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Local rankings
Review management
Map rank tracker
Listing management

This is a feature where Semrush can really give you an edge over your competitors who are using Similarweb. Do you know why? Because Similarweb doesn’t offer this feature at all.

But Semrush offers a Map Rank Tracker tool that allows you to track your rankings on Google Maps. It also helps you manage location-specific keywords. You can search for local keywords by selecting any location and getting a detailed overview – including search intent, competition, and CPC.

Semrush also has a Listing Management tool. It helps you manage your Google My Business listing and improve local search rankings. With around 142 geo databases – Semrush is perfect for local SEO for business all around the world.

Winner: Semrush

If you rely on local customers – Semrush provides a strong advantage. Similarweb, unfortunately, lacks these local SEO tools altogether.

Similarweb vs. Semrush – On-Page SEO & Technical SEO

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
On-page SEO checker
User experience ideas
Website analytics
Log file analyzer
SEO content template
Core Web Vitals
Semantic ideas

Again, Semrush is a clear winner here. The platform offers an On-Page SEO Checker. This tool analyzes each page individually and gives you essential information. It doesn’t just point out errors but also suggests ways to improve.

There’s even an optimization ideas section – where you can receive 40-50 ideas for better optimization. You will get – strategy ideas, backlink ideas, technical SEO ideas, content ideas, and more.

Semrush also offers other advanced features like a – Log File Analyzer. It helps you see what happens when a search engine scans your website and makes necessary on-page changes to boost your ranking.

Winner: Semrush

Sadly, Similarweb doesn’t offer anything like this – which makes it less ideal for users looking for advanced on-page SEO features.

For a more detailed breakdown, see this post on 7 reasons to choose Semrush over Similarweb

Similarweb vs. Semrush – Off-Page SEO

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Backlink analytics
Rank monitoring
Position tracking
Automated link building
Backlink gap tracking
Bulk analysis
Backlink profile auditing

Off-page SEO basically consists of building backlinks. And guess what? I’ve used both Semrush and Similarweb for this purpose.

However, I found Semrush to be much more effective. This platform offers a full range of tools for backlink analysis and outreach. While Similarweb also offers the same feature – Semrush feels like a hands-on tool. It provides insights that allow you to take action at your own pace.

One feature I found particularly useful is the – Backlink Gap Analysis. It shows you high-authority sites linking to competitors but not to you. This helps identify potential link-building targets.

But hey, with Similarweb – you can easily find industry-wise referral opportunities that you may not necessarily discover sometimes from Semrush.

While both tools can help with off-page SEO – Semrush has some advanced features. For example – it helps you to automate link building outreach. It also gives you a detailed look at your backlink profile and – allows you to analyze your competitors’ link profiles in bulk. Similarweb doesn’t offer these features.

Winner: Semrush

Unlike Semrush – Similarweb lacks robust link-building tools. While it offers some backlink insights – it doesn’t allow you to track competitors’ backlinks effectively.

Similarweb vs. Semrush – Competitor Analysis

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Daily and weekly dataAdditional cost
Historical dataUp to 5 yearsUp to 5 years
Geographical database190 countriesWorldwide info
Audience analysis
Industry analysis Additional cost
Bulk analysis
Quick insights cards
Competitor activity tracking
Competitor ad campaign tracking
Keyword gap analysis

When it comes to competitor analysis, I’ve used both Similarweb and Semrush, and the differences are clear. Semrush offers a wide range of tools, including Domain Overview, Traffic Analysis, Organic Research, Backlink Gap, Keyword Gap, and many more. These features provide deep insights into how my site compares to competitors over time.

Additionally, it helps track keyword rankings, search volume, CPC, and keyword difficulty.

As for Similarweb, it has some basic features like – Website Performance and Competitor Tracking. Its Keyword Gap tool shows a graph of underperforming keywords but doesn’t provide the depth I need to develop effective strategies.

Winner: Semrush

Overall, I found Semrush much more effective for detailed competitor analysis – while Similarweb only offers a surface-level view.

Semrush vs. Similarweb – Content Marketing

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Content ideas
Competitor content and channel analysis
Post tracking
Topic research
Market research
SEO writing suggestions
Content audit
Content marketplace
Personalized keyword metrics
Rephrase with AI

Content marketing is one of the core services I offer to businesses and agencies. And guess which tool I often use? Both because each one has unique features. But if you ask me to pick one, I will surely go with Semrush.

Semrush offers features like Topic Research – where you can enter a topic and quickly get dozens of content ideas. I especially love using the “Trending subtopics first” option to spot popular articles. Also, the SEO content template and writing assistant help optimize my work in real-time – suggesting keywords and improving readability.

The best part? The platform has a content marketplace. Here, you can easily find writers to write content for your business. This is a really cool feature if you don’t have an in-house content writing team.

Now, Similarweb does provide some helpful tools, like the – Keyword Seasonality report. It shows when to publish content based on trends. But, it lacks the comprehensive features that Semrush offers throughout the content creation process.

Winner: Semrush

Overall, if you’re serious about content marketing – Semrush is the clear winner.

Similarweb vs. Semrush – Social Media Marketing

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Ad campaign creation/management
Competitor social tracking
Social media management
Posting
Social media content creation
Social media content optimization
Performance analysis

I’ve found Semrush to be a powerful tool for social media marketing. It allows me to manage my social media accounts, find the best content types, create and share content on different channels, schedule posts, as well as keep off all my social activities.

I can analyze how well my posts are doing and compare my performance against competitors. The Influencer Analytics feature is a bonus – as it helps identify potential brand ambassadors for collaborations.

On the other hand – Similarweb’s social media features are more limited. While it provides some insights into competitors’ social media engagement – it lacks essential tools like a content scheduler and unified inbox.

Winner: Semrush

If you’re looking for an all-in-one solution to manage and analyze your social media – Semrush is definitely the better choice.

Similarweb vs. Semrush – Advertising

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
PPC keyword research
Keyword gap finder
Competitor research
Keyword discovery
Keyword manager
Keyword gap finder
Display ad suggestions
Ad builder

For advertising, both tools offer almost similar features. You can use them to get valuable insights into competitors’ ad campaigns. It gives you an idea about how much they are spending on ads. Moreover, you can also use them to find keyword gaps when creating ads.

I’ve used Semrush to manage PPC keywords – and its Keyword Manager is amazing. It helps me organize my keywords into baskets – making campaign creation much easier.

Similarweb, on the other hand – provides useful suggestions for display ads based on what competitors are doing. It shows which channels they’re using and the estimated costs. This is quite helpful. But, I found that Similarweb’s features are limited unless you upgrade to a custom plan. Now, this can be a problem if your budget is low.

Winner: Semrush

While both tools have their strengths, I prefer Semrush for its comprehensive and affordable PPC advertising toolkit.

Similarweb vs. Semrush – Site Audit

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Site audit tool
Health score (0-100)
Issue categorization (Errors, Warnings, Notices)
Core Web Vitals evaluation
JavaScript crawling
Log File Analyzer

When it comes to site auditing, I find Semrush far superior to Similarweb. Semrush offers a Site Audit tool that checks your website for various technical issues affecting performance and assigns a health score from 0 to 100. The platform even compares my site’s health to the top 10% in my niche, which is pretty cool.

The tool categorizes issues into three types: errors, warnings, and notices. Errors are highlighted in red, and when I click on them, Semrush provides clear explanations and recommended fixes. It also evaluates site performance and Core Web Vitals. What’s more, Semrush can crawl JavaScript pages and allows me to compare audits over time.

While Similarweb’s Site Audit feature includes over 300 checks, I noticed many of them overlap, making it less effective. Semrush, on the other hand, offers dedicated tools like a Log File Analyzer and an Accessibility Scan. Best of all, Semrush’s Site Audit is available in all plans, whereas Similarweb requires a pricey custom plan.

Winner: Semrush

Semrush is a must-have tool for anyone serious about optimizing their site.

Similarweb vs. Semrush – Reporting and Collaboration

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Daily report limit (Basic plan)3,0001,000
Daily report limit (Guru plan)5,000
Daily report limit (Enterprise plan)10,000+
Results per reportUp to 10,0001,000
Custom PDF reports
Reporting templatesAdditional cost
External source data embeddingAdditional cost

I’ve tried various tools – but Semrush offers the most generous limits for daily reports. Even with the basic Pro plan, I can pull up to 3,000 domain and keyword analytics reports each day. This is more than enough for any large website. If you upgrade to the Guru or Enterprise plans, those limits increase to 5,000 and 10,000+ reports.

Each report provides up to 10,000 keyword and domain analytics results. In contrast, Similarweb only offers 1,000 results per report, and if I want to increase that limit — you have to pay more than double the price of Semrush.

Winner: Semrush

So, for anyone who needs detailed reporting – Semrush is clearly the better choice. It offers custom PDF reports as well as reporting templates and external source data embedding.

Similarweb vs. Semrush – Domain Analysis

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Total domain profiles808 million
Organic traffic estimates
Domain authority score
Detailed backlink information

Both tools allow you to enter a domain name and get valuable insights – but Semrush provides more in-depth data. The platform has around 808 million domain profiles. Moreover, it offers 543 million desktop keywords, 774 million desktop domain profiles, 80.1 million mobile keywords, and 32.1 million mobile domain profiles.

In Semrush, I can see the organic traffic estimates, domain authority score, and a list of top-ranking keywords. It even offers detailed backlink information. While Similarweb presents its data clearly, it lacks many of the detailed metrics found in Semrush.

Another significant advantage of Semrush is its ability to filter domain analysis by country. This feature helps me tailor my SEO strategies to specific audiences.

Winner: Semrush

Semrush offers a richer set of tools and insights for domain analysis – making it the better choice for serious marketers.

Similarweb vs. Semrush – Traffic Analysis

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Traffic channels
Monthly visits
Average visit duration
Accuracy indicator
Unique visitor data
Audience Overview insights
Coverage regions190
Deduplicated audience metric

Both tools offer comprehensive traffic analysis, like – traffic channels, monthly visits, and average visit duration. However, Semrush has a handy accuracy indicator to help gauge data reliability. It also provides unique visitor data – which Similarweb marked as “N/A.”

Also, Semrush’s Audience Overview tab offers deep insights into traffic sources. But you’ll need to pay for the Trends add-on to access it. Did you know? Semrush’s web traffic data and market insights cover – 500 TB of raw data, 190 regions, 200 million panelists and analyze 1 billion events each day.

While Similarweb provides useful demographic data even on its free plan – it lacks some details that Semrush includes. But it has recently added a deduplicated audience metric – which is great for understanding true reach.

Winner: Semrush

I find Semrush delivers more valuable insights for serious traffic analysis.

FeaturesSemrushSimilarweb
Backlink profile information
Backlink database size43 trillion3.6 trillion
Backlink data update frequencyEvery 15 minutesDaily
Identification of toxic backlinks
Access to comprehensive backlink data

Do you know why? Because the platform offers the most recent and up-to-date information about backlink profiles. Also, their database has around 43 trillion backlinks compared to Similarweb’s 3.6 trillion. This massive difference is important for any marketer.

Plus, Semrush updates its backlink data every 15 minutes. The tool crawls around 25 billion URLs each day and has nearly 1.6 billion referring domains.

With Semrush’s Backlink Analytics – you can easily get data about your site’s authority score, organic traffic, and referring domains. I also love how Semrush allows us to identify toxic backlinks. And then, there is the Backlink Gap tool. It lets you see where your competitors get their backlinks.

Lastly, Semrush also helps in link building. Simply enter your domain name, and the platform will give you backlink suggestions. After that, you can conduct outreach to build a solid backlink profile.

On the other hand, Similarweb lacks comprehensive backlink data – requiring a custom plan that starts at $15,000 annually for full access.

Winner: Semrush

Semrush is the best choice with its larger database, quicker updates, and complete link-building tools.

Need a more detailed feature-by-feature comparison? Check out these insights that highlight why Semrush stands out as the preferred tool over Similarweb.

Semrush vs. Similarweb – Data Sources, Quality and Accuracy

FeatureSemrushSimilarweb
Data accuracy
Data for smaller websites
Cross-verified data
Historic data (since 2012)
Geographic filtering (120+ countries)

Apart from comparing the features, you also need to consider the data quality and sources of the platforms. This is important because if the data isn’t reliable – none of the features will be as effective.

Data Quality and Accuracy:

  • Semrush is a top choice for data accuracy due to its thorough cross-checking process. It gathers data from various sources – which are then verified across different devices and countries. This multi-step verification guarantees that the data is reliable. Additionally, Semrush’s data covers websites of all sizes – giving insights, even for smaller sites.
  • In contrast – Similarweb’s data collection is less reliable for smaller websites since it focuses on those with over 5,000 monthly visits. Also, the data isn’t cross-verified, which makes it less reliable and accurate.

Data Sources:

  • Semrush uses a mix of web crawlers, machine learning, and third-party data to provide its metrics. I found its data to be quite comprehensive – and the algorithms are always being updated to stay accurate.
  • Similarweb, on the other hand, collects data from multiple sources—like partnerships, browser extensions, and public data. While its data is good for broader trends – it may not be as precise for low-traffic websites.

Historic Data

Semrush provides data dating back to 2012 – offering a deep history for analyzing domain trends. In contrast, Similarweb gives up to five years of data – but accessing more than six months requires a costly custom plan.

Geographic Range

Semrush lets users filter data by 120 countries without extra cost – while Similarweb requires a premium plan for detailed country filtering. If you need even more – Semrush’s Trends add-on gives access to traffic data from 190+ countries.

Winner: Semrush

Semrush’s broader coverage, accuracy, and longer history make it a better tool for in-depth analysis.

Semrush vs. Similarweb – Market Research and Add-Ons

FeatureSemrushSimilarweb
Market research tools
All-in-one add-on
Focus on competitor analysis
Focus on e-commerce insights
Availability for all plans
Pricing for add-ons$289 per monthCustom pricing required

When it comes to market research add-ons – Semrush offers a solid option with their .Trends solution. It is available for all paid plans. This 4-in-1 tool gives deep insights into market and competitor trends to help businesses plan their strategies.

  • It includes tools like Market Explorer, Traffic Analytics, One2Target, and EyeOn. These tools provide data on – market shifts, traffic sources, audience demographics, and competitor activity.

Winner: Semrush

While both platforms offer valuable market research features – I find Semrush more convenient and affordable.

Semrush vs. Similarweb – User Interface and Ease of Use

FeatureSemrushSimilarweb
Fixed menu
Clutter-free navigation
Compact data presentation
Easy access to features
User-friendly experience

I found the interfaces of Semrush and Similarweb to be somewhat similar at first glance – with both having a left-side menu for easy navigation.

  • However, I prefer Semrush because its fixed menu makes it easier to find what I need quickly.
  • Similarweb’s menu can be a bit cluttered – requiring hovering and clicking – which can be annoying.

Also, both platforms present data well, but Semrush displays information more compactly, reducing the need for excessive scrolling.

Winner: Semrush

While both interfaces are functional – I believe Semrush offers a better user experience.

Semrush vs. Similarweb – API and Integrations

FeatureSemrushSimilarweb
Google tools integration
Social media integrations
CRM integrations
API access
Overall integration versatility

When it comes to API and integrations – I find Semrush to be more versatile. It connects with various Google tools like – Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Google Ads. Plus, it integrates with social media platforms like – Facebook and LinkedIn, and text editors like WordPress and Google Docs.

On the other hand – Similarweb has fewer integrations, primarily with Google Analytics – but it excels in CRM integrations with Salesforce and HubSpot. This focus on CRM may benefit businesses that rely heavily on customer relationship management.

Winner: Semrush

Semrush’s broader integration options make it a better choice for users looking to connect their data across multiple platforms.

Semrush vs. Similarweb – Advanced AI Tools

FeatureSemrushSimilarweb
Writing Assistant
AI Assistant (Copilot)
Keyword Magic Tool
Keyword Strategy Builder
AI for Sales Teams

I find Semrush to be particularly strong in this area – offering a variety of AI-powered tools. For example – the Semrush Writing Assistant helps me create SEO-friendly content by giving tips on readability, tone, and keyword usage.

The Semrush Copilot serves as an AI assistant that provides suggestions based on my activities and goals. Additionally, tools like the Keyword Magic – and Keyword Strategy Builder help me build personalized keyword strategies and content plans.

On the flip side, Similarweb has an AI tool called SAM – mainly for sales teams – which lacks the comprehensive marketing focus that Semrush offers.

Winner: Semrush

I believe Semrush’s AI tools make my marketing tasks much easier and more effective.

  • Similarweb’s Starter plan is slightly higher at $199.

Semrush vs. Similarweb – Customer Support

FeatureSemrushSimilarweb

  • Semrush clearly outshines Similarweb in customer support. I appreciate that Semrush offers three support channels: phone, email, and chat – making it easy to reach out. Their support icon is always visible in the interface – allowing quick access to help.
  • Similarweb only provides email and live chat support. While their live chat was responsive, I got email replies within 24 hours.

Both platforms have extensive FAQs and guides – so I can often find answers without needing to reach out. However, Similarweb’s articles felt too vague for my liking.

Winner: Semrush

Overall, I find Semrush’s support more user-friendly and effective.
